Windy City Classic - 1st and 2nd Flight Results

The last of the play-off matches was completed early Sunday afternoon (August 3). The heat and humidity were not quite as bad as Friday, August 1, but the players were glad for some shade. The eight finalists assembled at 8 a.m. and were joined by another member and a member-in-law...a number of on-lookers drifted in and out during the course of the competition, either by chance or design, as it was a nice day along the lake. The initial pairings were: Barney King vs Flash Kingsley, Judy Dahlstrom vs Jeff Lee, Rick Cooper vs Marjorie Schillo and Jason Jarchow vs Marshall Dahlstrom. Court assignments were drawn randomly and first round games doublebanked.

First Round:

Rick (6/0) prevailed by a whisker over the novice Marjorie (3/3), who exhibited, as she had throughout the tournament, a determined competitiveness. Result 10-9.

Jeff (4/2) managed at last to gain the advantage over Judy (4/2) by finally running a break for several hoops. Result 16-12.

Jason (6/0) exploited an mishap of Marshall's (4/2), to dominate their match on the challenging East Green. Result 19-7.

Flash (4/2) battled nip-and-tuck with Barney (6/0), amid the East Green sandtraps. Mr King's unfortunate roquet of dead ball proved to be the turning point. Result 13-12.

Championship Round

The overwhelmingly dominant first and second seeds, Rick (7/0) and Jason (7/0) meet for the first time in the tourney. Rick's experience and steady practice vault him to victory, despite Jason's onslaught of raw talent. Result 16-10.

Having upset the higher ranked seeds, Flash (5/2) and Jeff (5/2) also meet for their first match in the tournament. In essentially conservative play, they each manage to make some 4 or 5 hoop breaks, but wound up with the 14th match of the tournament ( of 60 total ) having a single point difference. Result Flash 14, Jeff 13.

In the traditional solemn ceremony atop Anderson Knoll on the West Green, the cheap, but awesome, skeleton trophies were awarded to the four finalists, Flash and Jeff, Rick and Jason.
